Hemp as a carbon warrior. Driving ecological integrity and social justice in the apparel world through hemp and slow fashion
How Pushaoo takes sustainable fashion one step further…
Alongside carbon neutrality, Pushaoo is centered around using sustainable hemp materials, zero plastic, recyclable packaging, and even our tags are in stamp-form - using soy ink! Pushaoo follows and implements numerous sustainable imperatives. To name just a few...
First, there are a lot of benefits from hemp as a textile:
Hemp grows rapidly and takes 3-4 months to reach maturity. This makes it one of the fastest CO2-to-biomass conversion tools available. It is a carbon warrior!
A single hemp plant yields 220% more fiber than a cotton plant.
Hemp is naturally pest-resistant and thus, needs no pesticides.
The cultivation of hemp saves water! Hemp uses only 1/20th the amount of water as regular cotton to grow and process.
Hemp naturally cleans and replenishes the soil, a process known as phytoremediation.
Hemp is one of the strongest and most durable of all-natural fibers. Did you know it is 2-3 times stronger than cotton!
Second, Pushaoo strives to collaborate with small businesses who cultivate their products from sustainable materials to further their creation's reach by sharing it with the world.
“Our products are carbon neutral from seed to shelf! We believe that sustainable fashion must be true to its values from start to finish. ”
Last but not least, Pushaoo’s approach for carbon neutrality is to offset the carbon footprint of our supply chain and have a mix of Reforestation, Renewable Energy, and Community projects.
Pushaoo’s aim is to be accountable and transparent, and always strive to implement innovative ideas to ensure our business aligns with our philosophy.
Slow and carbon-neutral fashion made from hemp…
Pushaoo sells incredibly unique hemp products such as fanny packs, backpacks, loungewear, face masks, and yoga mats. They aim to pioneer the hemp textile movement while working to rebrand hemp’s image.
What is the story behind your company?
Helena, the founder of Pushaoo, is originally from Brazil, but has grown up living all over the world. Pre-pandemic, she was based in Dubai working at Endeavor, a nonprofit organization that helps high-impact startups scale. She decided it was time for change and was planning to move to New York to help one of her portfolio startups expand to the US. Before she had started her new job, she went backpacking throughout Rajasthan in India where she was introduced to hemp as a textile.
“As someone that's really passionate about environmental sustainability, the more I learned about the benefits of the plant the more I fell in love with hemp as a textile,” she says.
The pandemic hit and her new job went down the drain so she decided to jump into the world of entrepreneurship. Consequently, Pushaoo was born in May of 2020 and they have come a long way since then. Helena points out that “it's been heartwarming to see the seeds of ideas being manifested”. Pushaoo now carries hemp loungewear, accessories, and artisanal pieces that are carbon neutral from seed to shelf.
Where will Pushaoo be in five years?
Pushaoo is an early player in the world of hemp fashion. Despite there being a clear scientific distinction between marijuana and hemp, US propaganda of the 1930s highly stigmatized hemp’s public image. This negative image also stemmed from an economic desire by the Cotton and Timber industry to derail competition. All of this led to the creation of The Marihuana Tax Act of 1937, which banned Hemp production in the United States. Eight decades later, we can finally celebrate the signing of the 2018 Farm Bill, which allows hemp to be cultivated, processed, and sold in the US. Pushaoo strives to rebrand hemp, since they believe that it is time to wake up and remind the world of why this fabric will pave the way towards sustainable fashion.
